Job Description

Reporting to the Vice President for Tax, the Tax Manager is primarily responsible for performing and managing, state, and local tax compliance, tax research, tax planning, permitting, and audits. Other responsibilities include assistance with federal tax workpapers and issues, preparation of quarterly and year-end income tax provision workpapers including footnotes and other tax related financial statement disclosures, and insuring tax compliance by preparing/reviewing and/or filing federal, state & local tax returns for the organization.  Internally, this position is viewed to have the career path of replacing the Vice President for Tax upon his retirement.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Management monthly sales and use tax reporting process to ensure proper information is provided to outside service providers for return filing, the filing of monthly food tax returns, and monthly reconciliation of tax liability accounts.
  • Track, research and respond to tax notices received from various state and local tax jurisdictions
  • Resolves complex issues and works independently with guidance in only the most complex situations
  • Acts as tax resource and provides technical tax guidance to other departments to ensure tax compliance
  • Participate in special projects, assignments and other duties as assigned.
  • Prepares workpapers for quarterly and year-end income tax provision in accordance with GAAP (ASC 740, formerly FAS 109)
  • Prepares supporting workpapers for federal income tax return filings.


Job Requirements

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required. Master’s Degree in Accountancy preferred.
  • At least 4-7 years related experience in one of the big 4 or large regional accounting firms preferred

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of tax, including sales and use tax, in a retail environment
  • Proficiency in preparing income tax provision and related disclosures, experience with tax provision software is preferred
  • Analytical and detail oriented with ability and drive necessary to deliver correct, reliable results in accordance with established internal and external deadlines
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively vertically and horizontally, internally and externally both in writing and verbally; ability to prepare and present data and reports effectively
  • Advanced skills in MS Office Suite, knowledge of Lawson financial software is a plus

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit at a computer or desk for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to use hands/arms to operate keyboard, telephone and for repetitive motion activities.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 25 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Must be able to communicate using speech, sight, and sound with or without assistive device.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, stoop or crouch while performing daily activities of the job.
