Books-A-Million is looking for a driven, analytical leader with proven experience in business management, driving organizational change, and championing innovative thinking to create the Inventory Planning function in our up and coming 2nd & Charles format. This team is at the forefront of building an innovative, scalable business strategy for 2nd & Charles to support significant business growth. This role will be responsible for the end-to-end inventory health across the entire format of 2nd & Charles stores, currently at 30 locations across the United States. You will develop and execute a strategy focused on implementation and management of open to buy, inventory management based on sales, turn, and GMROI, and continuous improvement projects to drive efficiencies and effectiveness, maximizing sales and profit, and ensuring a smooth flow of inventory. Thus, this role will require working with teams across the company such as Merchandising, Warehousing, IT, and Finance, and engaging with senior executives.


  • Lead initiatives to drive improvements in the Inventory Planning systems, data, and processes, including implementation and management of Open to Buy
  • Identify and develop action plans to address inventory needs based on sales, turn, and GMROI.
  • Provide sales and inventory analysis and reporting to the merchant team as well as Senior Management on a regular basis.
  • Drive root cause analyses to investigate under performance, develop action plans to address, and lead the implementation of solutions
  • Collaborate with the merchant team, warehouse, finance, and store teams to maximize sales and profit and to ensure smooth flow of inventory.
  • Create and manage a process to enforce data integrity for both new and used products in the brand including physical inventory postings and pricing.
  • Align cross-functional teams to ensure strong supplier execution and to understand and manage the demand drivers that impact key inventory metrics.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • BA/BS in Finance, Business Management, Marketing, Supply Chain, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in planning, buying, retail, finance, or operations, with open to buy experience highly preferred
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Office required, as well as knowledge of databases and business intelligence reporting.
  • Proven track record of taking initiative and driving results
  • Knowledge of Inventory Management systems and applications.
  • Experience managing and executing large projects from start to finish including project management, data gathering and modeling, problem solving and communicating recommendations
  • Proven experience in managing inventory and sales for a small to mid-sized, multi-location retailer.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Executive presence; able to clearly and consistently work side-by-side with a broad range of levels and functions to achieve objectives
