Job Description

The Vice President of Finance, Planning and Analysis reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer, and is responsible for providing business support and financial leadership to Books-A-Million and its affiliated company’s retail, real estate, and franchising operating companies. You will lead a department with three direct reports responsible for Treasury Operations, Financial Budgeting, Real Estate Finance Operations, and Risk Management. This position will also be an integral member of the Company’s governance committees and operational leadership teams as well as serve as the lead financial officer for the company’s Real Estate operations supporting and promoting profitable goals and objectives.

Responsibilities:

Retail banking and treasury operations
Financial budgeting, planning and analysis for the company’s consolidated business operations
Real Estate Financing and lender relations, including investment analysis
Real Estate Financial Operations to include tenant invoicing, collections, and expense management
Risk Management and insurance portfolio management

How You Will Make a Difference:

Possess a demonstrated ability to produce insightful financial and business performance analysis that informs and influences management decision making.
Experience developing enterprise-wide operating budgets and translating budget vs. actual variance analysis into performance improvement initiatives justified by rigorous business case modeling.
Develop and maintain lender relationships that support Retail Operations and Real Estate Operations financing and banking needs.
Be a pro-active member of the Retail Operations Real Estate Committee responsible for store proforma development and investment recommendations.
Provide financial leadership to the Real Estate operating companies focusing on cash flow management and expense controls.
Work closely with the Vice President Controller to develop business performance reports, quarterly board meeting materials
Performs other duties as required.

Job Requirements

Required Skills/Abilities:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Thorough knowledge of financial best practices and requirements with a proven ability to provide sound and ethical financial counsel to executive leadership.
Thorough understanding of and personal involvement with systems and methodologies of finance and administration.
Proven ability to develop structured and fact-based analysis, business plans and presentations that include succinct conclusions and recommendations. You will lead these analysis projects across our diverse business operations.
Demonstrated knowledge and proven experience of financial modeling and ability to synthesize complex and diverse information to develop solutions for multifaceted problems.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and organizational laws, regulations, guidelines, and best practices, including but not limited to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), federal acquisition regulations (FAR), and cost accounting standards (CAS).
Maintains knowledge of developments and trends in finance and administration

Education and Experience:

Undergraduate degree in Finance or Accounting; MBA from a top institution
Certified Public Accountant status highly desired.
Minimum of 10+ years of experience in accounting or finance management role focusing on analytical and strategic problem-solving experience

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Must be able to travel.
