At the heart of who we are, we are booksellers. Whether it is providing a new copy, a used copy, or a refreshing beverage, our associates have one goal: to serve each community with the best selection of books, gifts and more at the best prices.
Founded in 1917 as a street corner newsstand in Florence, Alabama, Books‑A‑Million, Inc. has grown to become the premier book retailing chain in the Southeastern United States, and the second largest book retailer in the nation. Based in Birmingham, Alabama, the company currently operates more than 260 stores in 32 states.
A century ago, large groups of construction workers from the North came to Florence, Alabama to build the Wilson Dam. Books‑A‑Million founder Clyde W. Anderson, only 14 at the time, arranged to have newspapers brought by train from the workers’ hometowns to fulfill their longing for news from home. The success of this venture led Clyde to build a newsstand constructed from old piano crates. Within a few years, Clyde and his brothers opened their first bookstore.
At the heart of who we are, we are booksellers. Whether it is providing a new copy, a used copy, or a refreshing beverage, our associates have one goal: to serve each community with the best selection of books, gifts and more at the best prices.
From a corner newsstand in 1917 to an omni-channel retailer in the 21st century, our Support Center associates make sure those who serve our customers are well-served themselves.
Across town or across the country, our distribution center brings the people and the products together every day. From on-line to over the road, our innovative thinking and creative processes only work when we have dynamic and hard-working individuals at the forefront.
Booklovers and booksellers are a great match. We share the love of reading with everyone we meet. More importantly, we share our respect and our support to our fellow associates and the communities we serve.
